Three-Stone Engagement Rings: Meaning, Styles and How to Choose

    Lab diamond three-stone engagement ring

Three stones, one story. A three-stone engagement ring is often said to honour your past, your present and your future together, with the centre stone representing the love you share today.

It's also one of the most versatile ring styles there is. Change the side stones and the same idea can feel classic, vintage, modern or bold. This guide explains what each style says, how to balance the stones, and how to choose the design that feels like you.

    Three-Stone, Trilogy or Trinity Ring?

You'll see these rings called three-stone, 3-stone, trilogy and sometimes trinity rings. They all describe the same design: a centre stone set between two side stones. "Trilogy" is common in Canada and the UK, while "three-stone" is the term most jewellers use in North America.

The design works beautifully as an engagement ring, and it's also a meaningful choice for an anniversary or a milestone, such as the birth of a child.

    Choosing Your Side Stones

The shape of the side stones changes the whole character of the ring. Here are the most popular choices and the look each one creates.

Round side stones: timeless and balanced

Matching round brilliants on either side of a round centre give the most sparkle and the most classic silhouette. The Alexis and Vanessa are beautiful examples.

Pear side stones: soft and romantic

Pear-shaped side stones curve gently toward the centre, framing it like petals. They flatter the finger and pair well with round, oval and cushion centres. See the Angelina, or the Seraphine with its ruby centre.

Tapered baguettes: sleek and Art Deco

Long, slim baguettes create clean lines and an elegant, architectural feel. They're a natural match for emerald, radiant and oval centres. Take a look at the Adoration and the Johanna Oval.

Trillion side stones: bold and modern

Triangular trillions make the ring look wider and add strong, crisp sparkle. They suit round and cushion centres especially well, as in the Kaira.

Half-moon and trapezoid side stones: distinctive and refined

Half-moons and trapezoids sit flush against the centre stone for a seamless, contemporary look. They're a favourite with radiant and oval centres. Explore the Alexandra, Caleena and Distinction.

    Matching the Centre Stone

A few pairings that always work well:

    • Round centre: round, pear or trillion side stones.
    • Oval centre: pear, tapered baguette or half-moon side stones.
    • Emerald or radiant centre: tapered baguettes, trapezoids or matching emerald cuts.
    • Princess centre: matching princess cuts, like the Alexis Princess.

If you love colour, a lab-grown ruby or sapphire centre with lab diamond side stones makes a striking three-stone ring. Browse our ruby and blue sapphire rings for ideas.

    Getting the Proportions Right

As a guide, side stones usually look best at roughly a quarter to half the carat weight of the centre stone. With a 1.50 carat centre, side stones of about 0.25 to 0.50 carat each keep the centre as the clear focal point while adding plenty of presence.

Three-stone rings are often described by total carat weight (ct.tw), the combined weight of all three stones. When you compare rings, check both the centre stone's weight and the total, so you know exactly what you're getting.

On a slender finger, a slightly smaller centre with closely set side stones looks elegant and balanced. On a longer finger, larger side stones or elongated shapes like pears and baguettes make a beautiful statement.

    Three-Stone, Halo or Solitaire?

A solitaire keeps all the attention on one stone. A halo surrounds the centre with small diamonds for maximum sparkle. A three-stone ring sits between the two: more presence and meaning than a solitaire, with a cleaner, more open look than a halo.

Want it all? The Catalina combines a halo with two side stones for a truly dazzling ring.

Lab Diamonds Make Three-Stone Rings More Attainable

Three stones mean more carat weight, which is where lab grown diamonds shine. A PURE® lab diamond is a real diamond with the same brilliance and hardness as a mined stone, at a fraction of the price. You can also choose ATERNA® Gen 4 diamond-grade moissanite for even more fire. Every ring is handcrafted in Canada in solid gold or platinum.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is a trilogy ring the same as a three-stone ring?

Yes. Trilogy, three-stone, 3-stone and trinity rings all describe a centre stone set between two side stones. The names are used interchangeably.

Are three-stone engagement rings still in style?

Yes. Three-stone rings are a timeless classic, and modern side stones like pears, half-moons and trapezoids give them a fresh, contemporary look.

Can a three-stone ring be used as an anniversary ring?

Absolutely. Because it symbolizes your past, present and future together, a three-stone ring is a popular choice for a milestone anniversary or a growing family.

Do three-stone rings look good on small hands?

Yes. Choose a modest centre stone with closely set side stones of about a quarter of its weight. The ring will look balanced and elegant without overwhelming the finger.

Can I mix gemstones in a three-stone ring?

Yes. A lab-grown ruby, sapphire or emerald centre with lab diamond side stones is a beautiful way to add colour, and we can create custom combinations too.
