Diamond Pendant Necklace Guide: Chain Length, Necklines and Layering

round brilliant lab diamond pendant in yellow gold

A diamond pendant is one of the most personal pieces of jewellery you can own. It rests close to the heart, it's worn almost every day, and it often marks a moment: a birthday, a graduation, a new baby or simply a "just because."

Choosing the stone is only half the story. Where the pendant sits, how it frames your neckline and how it layers with other pieces all shape how it looks on you. This guide covers chain length, necklines, shapes with meaning, and how to layer like a jeweller.

Lab Grown, Lab Created, Man Made or Simulated?

You'll see pendants described as lab grown, lab created or man made diamonds. These all mean the same thing: a real diamond grown in a controlled environment, with the same sparkle and hardness as a mined diamond.

Simulated diamond pendants are different. They're set with look-alike stones such as cubic zirconia, which scratch and cloud over time. Every pendant in our necklace and pendant collection can be set with a real PURE® lab diamond or our ATERNA® Gen 4 diamond-grade moissanite.

    Choosing a Chain Length

Chain length decides where your pendant falls, and that changes the whole look:

Chain length Where it sits Best for
16 inches At the base of the neck, near the collarbone Open and boat necklines, a delicate, close look
18 inches Just below the collarbone The most popular length, flattering on almost everyone
20 inches A few centimetres below the collarbone Crew necks, higher necklines and layering
22 to 24 inches At or above the neckline of most tops Wearing over clothing and layered looks

Most of our pendants come on a solid gold 18 inch chain, the most versatile length for everyday wear.

Matching Your Pendant to Your Neckline

    • V-necks: elongated shapes like pear and marquise echo the V beautifully.
    • Crew necks and high necklines: a slightly longer chain lets the pendant sit just above the fabric.
    • Strapless and off-the-shoulder: a round or halo pendant on a shorter chain adds sparkle to an open neckline, perfect for weddings and evenings.
    • Collared shirts: a small solitaire tucked just below the collar looks polished and understated.

    Shapes With Meaning

Some pendant shapes carry a story of their own, which makes them especially meaningful as gifts:

    • Heart: the most direct way to say "I love you." See the Quore heart pendant.
    • Three stones: past, present and future, a lovely anniversary or new-family gift. See the Priscilla trilogy pendant.
    • Pear: a graceful teardrop that's often given to mark a milestone. See the Amy pear pendant.
    • Coloured gemstones: a birthstone pendant makes the gift personal, such as a ruby for July, an emerald for May or a sapphire for September.

    Solitaire, Halo or Bezel?

A solitaire pendant, like the Amore round or Maeve oval, lets one stone shine and goes with everything. A halo, like the Gemma, adds a ring of sparkle and makes the centre look larger. A bezel setting, like the Esmee, wraps the stone in a smooth rim of metal for a sleek, modern look that's ideal for everyday wear.

    How to Layer Necklaces

Layering lets your pendant become part of a look that's entirely your own. A few simple rules help:

    • Space your lengths about 2 inches apart, such as 16, 18 and 20 inches, so each piece sits on its own.
    • Let one piece lead. Your diamond pendant should be the focal point, with finer chains around it.
    • Mix textures, not too many metals. Different chain styles add interest, while one or two metal colours keep it cohesive.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best chain length for a diamond pendant?

An 18 inch chain is the most popular choice. It sits just below the collarbone, flatters most necklines and is easy to wear every day.

    Should I choose a 16 or 18 inch chain?

Choose 16 inches if you'd like the pendant to sit close to the base of the neck, especially with open necklines. Choose 18 inches for a versatile everyday length that works with most tops.

Can I wear my pendant on a different chain?

Yes. Most pendants can be moved to another chain of a similar thickness. Ask our team if you'd like help finding the right length or style.

How do I layer a pendant with other necklaces?

Space each chain about 2 inches apart in length, let your pendant be the focal point, and keep to one or two metal colours for a polished look.

What is a meaningful pendant to give as a gift?

A heart pendant expresses love, a three-stone pendant celebrates past, present and future, and a birthstone pendant makes the gift personal to the person receiving it.
